“My greatest gratitude to all MicroEnsure employees for the scholarship grant you’ve provided to me. Thank you very much! God Bless you all!” Roffagen Avance
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for today. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. A quote that inspired MicroEnsure Philippines employees to send a scholar to school.
Each employee contributes $2 monthly from their own salaries to their chosen outreach fund. This fund is part of an annual outreach program that provides relief goods and materials to the people living in calamity-hit areas or is utilised by spending time and conducting relevant activities for less fortunate individuals. This year, the team decided to use the funds to send a scholar to school. By doing this, it was felt that not only would the fund provide material needs but help the scholar in defining her future.
Roffagen Avance, 19, was endorsed by one of the employees and participated in a screening process before she was chosen to be the employees’ scholar. She is currently in her 3rd year of studying a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with a Major in English at West Visayas State University – Janiuay Campus, Janiuay, Iloilo and consistently shows interest in her studies which results in high grades.
Roffagen is very thankful for this blessing since she relies on the small income of her parents. Neither of her parents had an opportunity to attend college, her father is an occasional construction worker, while her mother accepts laundry jobs and she is 2nd among 5 siblings. Becoming a teacher has been her dream since she was a child, but what really motivates her is to uplift the living standard of her family and pay back all the hard works of her parents. She is also looking forward to being an inspiration to her future students and a living testimony that nothing is impossible to a person who works hard for her dreams.
The team is providing her a total of $200 per semester which covers her school expenses and monthly allowance.
A computer set was presented to her on 18 October 2017, since she often had to go to the nearest computer shop to do her assignments and projects.
MicroEnsure Philippines employees have shown their generosity in their service to their company and furthermore to people who have dreams in life and who value the importance of family.
