Inclusive Insurance Innovation Lab
The Access to Insurance Initiative (A2ii) is a global partnership with the mission to inspire and support supervisors to promote inclusive and responsible insurance, thereby reducing vulnerability.
Last year, MicroEnsure were honoured to become part of the A2ii’s latest programme – the Inclusive Insurance Innovation Lab. The Lab is jointly organised by the A2ii and the Global Leadership Academy (GLAC) of the German technical development agency (GIZ).
MicroEnsure’s Regional Director for Ghana & Malawi, Adjoa Boateng, has been part of country teams who are developing roadmaps and identifying concrete next steps and committing to specific actions that will be undertaken to improve access to insurance for underserved people and businesses.
The programme’s purpose is to get industry players such as policy makers, regulators and businesses to come together and develop innovative solutions to promote access to inclusive insurance.

For its maiden programme, 4 countries were selected out of 14 applications. They were Albania, Ghana, Kenya and Mongolia. As a key player in the development of inclusive insurance in Ghana, MicroEnsure was selected as part of the Ghana team which will continue working together over the coming months to create key drivers for the industry.
The programme consists of 3 country sessions and 2 global sessions as well as a final online session. Ghana’s first 2 country sessions were held in November 2017 and April 2018. The first global session was held in Ghana in March 2018 and MicroEnsure Ghana secured support from the National Insurance Commission in Ghana under the instruction of the Ministry of Finance.
The group aims to come together and identify priority areas for innovation and learning over the coming 12 months. You can find out more about the programme so far here.
Next month, Leona Abban will tell us more about the Albanian programme.
