"Cash benefit will go a long way to support family..."

Customer: Garba Idris

Location: Nigeria

Amount received: NGN 100,000 ($250 USD)

Idris Gaya Ado had been a customer of Credit Direct Limited (CDL), but unfortunately in June this year he passed away following a cardiac arrest.

Garba Idris, Idris’s brother and beneficiary, was aware of the insurance cover his brother had with the CDL loan.  He contacted the Kano branch where Idris had taken out the loan and with the support of the Loan Officer, he was able to submit the required documents for a claim.

A few days later Garda was asked to visit the branch where he was presented with a cheque for NGN 100,000 ($250 USD).  Garba was really pleased with how easy the process for submitting documents was and how quickly he received the money.

When he received the cheque, Garba said, the cash benefit will go a long way to support his family financially. Because his brother was the eldest in the family and the main bread winner, the family now needs all the support they can get.

"...an eye opener of how helpful insurance is”

Customer: Ivie Gorre

Location: Philippines

Amount received: Php 100, 000 ($1880 USD)

Santiago Gorre, 59, was a resident of Talacogon, Agusan del Sur and a member of Taytay sa Kauswagan Inc. (TSKI). Together with his wife Ivie Gorre, they maintained a rice field, a small poultry farm and a store. The couple have four children. Two are married, one is pursuing his priesthood and the other is in Grade 8.

Santiago was an agriculturist. He shared his knowledge in farming to other local farmers. He was devoted to farming and also serving the community. Santiago was a long time Barangay councillor.

In February 2018, Santiago was rushed to the hospital after having difficulty breathing and slurred speech, which appeared to be the symptoms of high blood pressure.  The symptoms persisted and eventually he was admitted to the intensive care unit. In March 2018, he suffered a cardiac arrest, the doctors managed to save him but he remained unconscious. The doctors advised the family that there was no chance of Santiago recovering.  Ivie and her children were extremely sad. Because the hospital was not able to do any more for Santiago, Ivie had no choice but to process the hospital bills for her husband’s discharge. Sadly Santiago died whilst being taken home from the hospital.

Ivie was grieving, but she also had to think about burial expenses. She remembered that Santiago was insured under Gold Plan 2, an insurance product that is tied up to the TSKI loan programme.  Ivie provided the required documents to TSKI which were processed by MicroEnsure for assessment. The claim was approved and Ivie received a total claim amount of Php 100, 000 ($1880 USD)

The money helped them pay their debts, hospital and funeral bills. Ivie was also able to use some of the money for their store.

Before Santiago died, Ivie had no trust in insurance provision, she even told Santiago not to take out the insurance. But Santiago’s death has made her realise how important having insurance is. She said, “The incident was an eye opener for me of how helpful insurance is”. Ivie and her family were pleased that the insurance helped them at such a sad time.

Ivie is now a TSKI member and feels secure because she herself has insurance cover now.

Gold Plan 2 is a product offered to renewing clients of TSKI which covers the principal member and five family members with life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.

"Excited about the benefits"

Customer: Richmond Yao Lanyo
Location: Ghana
Amount received: GHS 6,353 / $1,330 USD

Richmond Yao Lanyo was an employee of Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. for 10 years. During this time his he was a loyal customer of Barclays Bank.  When Richmond’s company went through a downsizing exercise and he was made redundant, he was completely unaware there was retrenchment cover as one of the benefits of the account.

Richmond walked into his branch at Tarkwa to check his account balance and the staff made him aware that he qualified to make a claim. His initial reaction was one of complete shock. Branch staff advised him of the relevant documents required to make a claim. Once the documentation was submitted, Richmond received an SMS alert notifying him the claim had been accepted and the claim benefit was deposited in his account. He was really excited and he described Barclays as an ‘extraordinary’ bank.

Richmond planned to invest the money for his family’s upkeep and develop a personal project. He has spoken very highly of the Barclays retrenchment product to all his friends who are now equally excited about it.

"I fully appreciate the benefits of insurance"

Customer: Argie Bondad
Location: Philippines
Amount received: Php 100, 000 / $1850 USD

Argie Bondad is a 33 year old hardworking head of the family, he works as a construction worker. His wife Llane Bondad, was pregnant with their third baby, she sold ready-to-wear products to help her husband with their daily expenses. Llane was a Taytay Sa Kauswagan Inc. (TSKI) member in a branch located at their hometown Cabatuan, Iloilo.

The family was living a very modest life and working hard to provide their children with a better future, but everything was disrupted when Llane got sick. A day before Christmas in 2017, like every Filipino family, Llane celebrated with her family by feasting on their prepared foods. But on Christmas Eve she suddenly felt stomach pain. Argie was worried and wanted to take her to the hospital due to her pregnancy but she insisted she only needed rest. But when the situation got worse Argie took her to the hospital immediately. It wasn’t a simple stomach pain, Llane stayed in the hospital for more than a month, and on 5 February 2018 she passed away. Fortunately, the baby was saved but was born two months premature.

Argie was very sad due to the sudden loss of Llane. In addition to grieving he had to contend with hospital bills and funeral costs. He had to borrow money from his relatives to cover the hospital bills and funeral expenses. But he was able to promise to pay them back knowing that her wife had an active loan with TSKI.

Llane was insured under her Gold Plan 2 policy. As her beneficiary, Argie reached out to the TSKI branch and asked how to process his claim. The staff were able to tell him what documents were required and once these were submitted, his claim was approved. Argie received Php 100, 000 / $1850 USD in cash through OK Remit.

A large part of the money will be used to pay their debts, and the remaining will be for their daily expenses and for the education of their children. Llane will be remembered as a woman who consistently showed care and love for her husband and children. Argie still misses his wife, he said I still can’t accept that she’s no longer with us, the pain is still there. He will always remember her especially when he sees their children. But as the only parent, Argie displays no weakness in front of his children. The insurance money will be their tool for starting their new life. “The amount we claimed will be a great help for us facing the future without my wife” he said.

Argie appreciates what insurance can do especially in this kind of situation. He had heard a lot of good things from other TSKI members about the insurance prior to the sad situation with his wife. He now fully appreciates the benefits of insurance and plans to sign-up for other products in the future.

"The insurance benefit was very timely"

Customer: Samuel Adivila
Location: Ghana
Amount received: GHS 10,000 /$2150 USD

Samuel Adivila has banked with Barclays Ghana for the past four years. He signed up with Barclays after a friend recommended the Ultimate Account to him.

The Barclays Ultimate Account offers free Retrenchment cover of up to 3 months’ salary for all customers who deposit their salaries with the bank.

Samuel was employed as a Business Advisor for six years, but was unfortunately retrenched when funding at the company was reduced.

Samuel’s friend reminded him that there was a retrenchment package that Barclays offered through the Ultimate Account. Samuel did not believe he could receive the benefit. He had a number of insurance policies, two educational policies and one funeral benefit. However, he had never received any benefits and was doubtful of the advantages of insurance cover in Ghana.

Even with these doubts he decided to give it a try and with the help of Barclays and MicroEnsure, the administrators of the policy, he was able to submit the required documents and had his claim validated. Much to his surprise and delight, he received an SMS confirming his payment of GHS 10,000 /$2150 USD after a few days.

While speaking to MicroEnsure, Samuel said the insurance benefit was very timely, allowing him to pay school fees (including advance payments) for his three children. He was also able to buy a used laptop to aid his search for a job and set up a small piggery.

Samual‘s said his perception of Barclays being a bank only for rich people has been dispelled. He found the Barclays staff to be down to earth, very responsive and always wearing a smile. He also really appreciated the same day salary receipt from Barclays. Samuel was really happy to tell his friends and colleagues about Barclays and the Retrenchment Package they offer and they are keen to get on-board too.

"The process was very easy"

Customer: Paul Aninakwa
Location: Ghana
Amount received: GHS 2,688/$595 USD

Paul had been banking with Barclays Ghana for the past four years. He switched to Barclays when he started working at Kateon Natie.

The Barclays Ultimate Account offers free retrenchment cover of up to 3 months’ salary for all customers who deposit their salaries with the bank.

Unfortunately Paul was affected by a restructuring exercise at Kateon Natie and was made redundant by the company this year.

Prompted by his employer’s discussion about retrenchment, he contacted Barclays after he received his retrenchment notice.

The Barclays staff were quickly able to advise him about the documents that would be required and once they were submitted, MicroEnsure, the administrators of the policy validated and processed the claim within a few days. He received GHS 2,688/$595 USD as redundancy benefit equivalent to 3 month’s salary.

Paul found the process very easy. He had some knowledge of insurance prior to his claim because he had friends in the industry, and had signed up for a funeral and health policy with other companies, this was the first opportunity he had to make an insurance claim and actually receive a benefit payout.

Paul used the money to finish setting up a new business. He explained that he had just finished building a structure for a cosmetic shop when he was retrenched. He was planning on using the money he received from Barclays to stock the shop.

Paul has found Barclays to be a trustworthy and reliable bank. He has never faced any banking problem since joining the Barclays family and he’s been spreading the good news about the Barclays Ultimate Account.

Amount received: 50,000 BDT [Approx. $600 USD]

Md. Abdul Motaleb, a 52 year old farmer was living his life as a farmer, providing for his family of 3 sons, 1 daughter and his wife. Over a period of two to three weeks, he started feeling chest pains and a reduction in strength while working in the field. He visited a local doctor who gave him pain killers and vitamins, however, over time his condition worsened. His face seemed to increase in size and, worried, his family took him to the Sadar hospital, where he was immediately admitted for observation. After further tests Abdul was diagnosed with late stage lung cancer and given a limited time to live.
With his children all still in education there was little financial support for treatment to prolong his life, however, by borrowing money from close friends and nearby relatives, treatment was started. Unfortunately within four to five months Abdul Motaleb died on the 11 December 2016.
As head of the family Abdul had always worked for the well-being of his family and when he had felt fully well prior to his diagnosis he would go to the local market for household shopping and agricultural supplies. Part of this regular trip would be to visit the GPCF close to his regular shops and he would get a small amount recharge. One day the GPCF agent told him about ‘Nirvoy’ the life insurance product for its valued customers and that all he had to do was register from his mobile.
Abdul permitted the GPCF agent to register his mobile, naming his second son, Md. Md. Abdul Motaleb Nirvoy Life Insurance Faridul Islam as his nominee. Soon after the event of his death, Faridul Islam, was notified by the GPCF agent that he was eligible to a Nirvoy claim and with the support of the GPCF personnel the family received a claim amount of BDT 50,000 on 25th April 2017.

Customer: Martha Auma
Location: Kenya
Amount received: 5000Ksh [Approx. $49 USD]

In January 2014, Martha lost her husband to a car accident. The previous year she had lost her younger sister to cancer, leaving five young children that Martha took in as her own. She was left with the responsibility of being the sole breadwinner for the five children. She started a small business selling fish, which she did for a few months until her health started deteriorating. Soon after she was diagnosed with diabetes.

The diagnosis was a strain on her and her family. She changed her diet, purchased medication and made regular visits to the hospital for check-ups. Martha still remained responsible for the school fees and other house bills, and the stress and strain resulted in her developing high blood pressure.

In November 2017, a Fearless agent met Martha near here home and explained the product, and its benefits. She felt it was a good product at a reasonable price that she could afford to pay. She didn’t have the money at the time, but promised to purchase the next time. When the agent returned the next week, Martha purchased the three-month cover for 497ksh. (approx.$4 USD)

On 21 January, a Saturday night, she wasn’t feeling well, and she couldn’t sleep. She asked her daughter to take her to the hospital the next day. Sunday morning they went to Thika nursing home where she took the necessary tests and found her blood sugar had become dangerously low, and her blood pressure had spiked. After two nights in the hospital she contacted MicroEnsure using the number on her membership card.

The claims team from MicroEnsure Kenya contacted Martha immediately to initiate the process to confirm the claim and verify her documentation. From the time Martha contacted MicroEnsure, to the time that her claim was approved was only 6½ hours. On the very next day she received cash on her Mpesa account, a much needed 5,000 ksh (approx.$49.00 USD) to help pay for her medical expenses.

The following week the MicroEnsure Kenya Fearless team visited Martha at a clinic nearby her home, giving her flowers, fruits and a smile. Martha was is in the process of recovery and was very impressed by the quick turnaround in receiving her benefit. She is very thankful for having Fearless Insurance, and appreciative of MicroEnsure and the claims team, saying, “I had doubted it because I don’t trust insurance companies, some don’t pay, but now I believe in it and am very happy because it’s effective and efficient.”

Customer: Layza Edelmo
Location: Philippines
Amount received: Php 100,00 [Approx. $2000 USD]

Layza Edelmo, 35, is a mother of two and a resident of Molo, Iloilo City. She is a long time member of Taytay sa Kauswagan Inc. (TSKI). Layza, along with her own family, is sharing their little home with her parents and two unmarried aunts. She works as a baby sitter and her husband, as a carpenter.

One of her aunts, Gemma Edelmo, 48, contributes to their daily expenses by selling a variety of candies and biscuits in a side street near their local chapel. Gemma, like Layza, is also a member of TSKI and has an insurance under Gold Plan 2.

On the third week of December 2016, Layza arrived at their house and discovered that Gemma was having difficulties in breathing and was enduring chest pain. They didn’t rush her to hospital right away since they are worried of the expenses but when the situation got worse, Gemma was brought to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, three days after her hospitalization, Gemma passed away due to heart failure.

Layza and her family were in deep grief since Gemma is always there for them especially in helping with their financial needs. Gemma is remembered as a friendly, hardworking and generous person. She is also actively participating in church activities.

Layza happens to be the beneficiary of Gemma in her policy under Gold Plan 2. Few days after the incident, and with the help of TSKI branch staff, Layza facilitated the claims and provided the necessary documents. Layza received a total claim amount of Php100, 000 in check. The said amount was used to pay their debts and funeral expenses and to fix parts of their house. Some amount were also given to Gemma’s brother and the remaining amount was saved for the education Layza’s children and for their daily expenses.

For a less fortunate family like Layza’s, this loss of a loved one could not only affect their daily lives but can also destabilized their financial situation. In this case, insurance money can somehow help ease the situation.

"...it is genuine and you can count on it."

Customer: Felix Bell
Location: Ghana
Amount received: 3,500 GHS [Approx. $790 USD]

Felix Bell, a 45 year old construction worker lived with his wife and son in Gbetsile, a
suburb of Tema.
In August 2017, he registered himself and his wife, Bernice Bell, to whom he has been married for twenty years, on Airtel Insurance (Family cover option).
One day, Bernice complained of feeling unwell so Felix gave her money to go to the hospital, but the doctors were unable to tell what was wrong with her. As time went on, Bernice’s health kept deteriorating and she kept losing weight. Not knowing what else to do, Felix took her to Tema General Hospital for a second opinion where she was diagnosed with chronic liver disease and severe Anaemia. The doctors immediately commenced treatment as her condition was advanced and for a while she seemed to be responding to treatment.
Felix was on his way to work one morning when he received a phone call from his
sister-in law, who was living with them at the time, informing him that his wife was neither breathing nor moving. He quickly returned back home and with the help of a friend, Bernice was rushed back to the hospital.
Whilst the doctors were attending to her, he went to the bank to get money to cater for the anticipated medical cost. Whilst he was still out, his sister-in law called him again asking him to immediately return to the hospital as her sister’s health had taken a turn for the worst. On reaching the hospital, he was given the devastating news that his wife, Bernice, had died. Two (2) days later, he called 580 to report his claim and was later called back and advised on the required documents he needed to submit for his claim to be processed.
He said he had no doubt that his claim would be paid and that he was expecting to be paid between GHS 1,000 and GHS 1,500. He was extremely happy and pleasantly surprised when he received the alert on his phone informing him that an amount of GHS 3,500 was paid into his Mobile Money Account. He said some of his friends have registered on Airtel Insurance because of his claim experience.
Felix said “I am very grateful to Airtel for what they have done for me. Airtel Insurance is not a lie, it is genuine and you can always count on it.”
He said part of the money he received would be used to take care of some of the funeral expenses and the rest would be invested in their son’s education.

"Airtel Insurance is real”

Customer: Gabriel Martey
Location: Ghana
Amount received: 3,500 GHS [Approx. $790 USD]

Gabriel Martey, a loyal subscriber of Airtel for four (4) years, had no knowledge of Airtel Insurance until a colleague from work mentioned it to him. He called the Airtel
Customer Service in order to get more information on the product and went on to register himself and his 2-year old daughter, Keturah Gabriel Martey, in September 2017.

Barely three (3) months later, Gabriel and his wife noticed that Keturah’s temperature was very high so they took her to the hospital where she was diagnosed and treated for Malaria and Bronchopneumonia. She was discharged on the fourth day when her temperature had gone down. Her mother took her home whilst Gabriel left for work. He was later called by his wife and informed that Keturah had collapsed and had to be rushed back to the same hospital. After she regained consciousness, her parents transferred her to the Tema General Hospital based on the doctor’s advice.
At the Tema General Hospital, she was kept under observation but her condition got worse the next day. Gabriel was asked to go and purchase some medications from the pharmacy and whilst he was there, he received a call informing him that Keturah had died. The medical report revealed the cause of death as Respiratory distress due to Sepsis, Bronchopneumonia and severe Malaria.

Gabriel later called 580 to report his insurance claim and was later called back and advised on the documents to submit. After submitting his documents his claim was processed and a benefit amount of GHS 3,500 was paid into his Airtel Mobile Money Account. He said he initially thought it was a fraudulent product but after he received the SMS alert of his claim benefit, he was very elated and now knows that “Airtel Insurance is real.”

He has even convinced some of his friends as well as two of his brothers to sign onto Airtel Insurance. The money he received was used to take care of some expenses and also pay back friends from whom he borrowed money during his daughter’s sickness.

Peace of mind and debts repaid

Customer: Charles Lamptey
Location: Ghana
Amount received: GHS 2,500 [Approx. $564 USD]

Martha Quarcoo signed up for Fearless Insurance on 22nd September, 2017 and registered her 25 year old son, Charles Lamptey as her Next of Kin. She opted for the 12-month cover which cost her as little as GHS 30 (approx. $6 USD) in premiums.

On 21st January, 2018, while on a phone call with her son, Martha complained of
diarrhoea. Her diarrhoea apparently started the afternoon of that day but by the evening when there was no improvement Martha was rushed to the La General Hospital. She was immediately attended to with intravenous fluids (drips) to replace the fluids that she had lost. Her children, Charles and Gertrude stayed by her bedside and left her at dawn. Gertrude returned that morning and while bathing her mom, Martha sadly died.

While sorting her mom’s documents, Gertrude found their mom’s insurance
documents and with the assistance of MicroEnsure Claims team in processing the relevant documents, Charles received a claim benefit of GHs 2,500 (approx. $564 USD).

Charles described the process as easy, he said, “I have never had any insurance policy because I thought insurers were like some of the microfinance companies who take your money and run away with it.”

Charles went on to say after receiving the Fearless claim benefit, he has seen for
himself that insurance works. He is going to sign up and get his friends to also come on board. Meanwhile, his sister Gertrude and her husband have signed onto the product.

A portion of the money received was used to repay loans received from friends to organize the funeral, another portion was also paid to the leadership of his mother’s church. This was to show their gratitude for the church’s support during their mother’s burial. What was left of the money was then shared amongst the children of the deceased. They indicated that the money paid them has given them peace of mind because all their debts have been paid.
They were truly grateful to MicroEnsure and Enterprise Life for coming through for them in this moment of need.
