Ratan Mia was a farmer, living with his wife four Sons and two daughters. He was a hardworking man, but over a number of months his health had deteriorated and he found it increasingly difficult to carry out his regular farming work. Eventually he visited a local doctor, who offered some general health suggestions, but was unable to give a proper diagnosis of the cause of Ratan’s poor health.
Ratan struggled on but his health got worse and he developed complications with this heart and lungs. The family were dependent on the local medical advisers who were still unable to identify the real reason for his illness and they did not have the finances to be able to get a better diagnosis and treatment. Sadly with the lack of a proper diagnosis Ratan died at just 54 years old.
Ratan was the head of the family and main breadwinner, he made the education of his children a priority. Without him the family believed they were going to struggle. According to Kawser, Ratan’s son, they felt they were in big trouble when his father died. Kawser worked as a salesman, but the sales commission was not enough for the whole family to survive.
Back in 2013 Ratan had found out about and registered with Nirvoy. Nirvoy provides Grameenphone (GP) customers with an opportunity to manage their life risk by simply committing to a nominal amount of spend on the GP network. Nirvoy offers free life insurance built on the monthly recharge of a customer.
Local people had shared their bad experiences with mainstream insurance companies with Kawser so he didn’t hold out much hope when he contacted Nirvoy. But because of a simple decision, today Ratan’s family have benefited greatly from Nirvoy. They received BDT 50,000 ($595 USD). The claim amount gave them hope. Kawser started his own retail shop, and the whole family is doing well.
Grameenphone in partnership with MicroEnsure Bangladesh and Pragati Life introduced ‘Nirvoy’ the life insurance product for its valued customers, which launched in 2013. Nirvoy Life Insurance, which is a Life Insurance programme, offers protection against the risk of loss of life by providing monetary compensation in the event of the loss of life of the registered (covered) customer during the period in which he/she had cover.
